I Am I Can
The I Am I Can Program was developed for students with Neurobiological Disorders (NBD) which include, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Asperger’s Syndrome, Childhood-Onset Bipolar Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and Depression. Many of these disorders are called Spectrum Disorders, which means that they may manifest features of two or more of these syndromes, making treatment complicated.
As measured by a standardized IQ test, the student has average to above average ability. The student has strong language skills, allowing him/her to verbalize their thoughts and needs. Their behavioral problems are the result of compulsions, fears, hyperactivity, impulsions, obsessions, mood swings, social skill deficits and/or tics. Therefore, Gersh Academy provides our students with a customized and fulfilling educational experience to suit their individual needs.
Objective
The primary objective of the program is to enable the student to be emotionally available to learn.
The student receives cognitive-behavioral training to help him/her become aware of individual symptoms and how to self-manage and regulate these symptoms.
The parent receives cognitive-behavioral training in order for the behavioral goals to remain consistent in school and at home.
Methodology
The I Am I Can program follows a neurobiological perspective.
This perspective creates a symptom neutral environment for students with neurobiological disorders.
The neurobiological perspective assumes that the student acts inappropriately because he/she has less control over how he/she thinks, feels or behaves.
At times, the student's behavior will be determined by his/her neurological condition and not the teacher or adult in charge.
The teacher or adult in charge will resist trying to control the student's behavior as a means for gaining control of the student's behavior.
Our Training
All staff members initially receive intensive training on neurobiological disorders and collaborative problem solving. In addition, it is required that all staff members participate in weekly training sessions that address different topics related to our student population.
Partnership with Parents
When a student is enrolled, so is the entire family. Parental communication is an important component of a student’s success at Gersh Academy. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend our on-site support/training groups to learn about our unique interventions and approaches. Frequent communication between parents and the classroom teacher is also encouraged to ensure continuity between home and school. Parents / guardians must be accessible during the school day and be open to modifying the student’s schedule when necessary.
